Miss...

By Amirul Aiman

We all do it. The dictionary definition is the failure to hit, encounter, be present, perceive and also means to escape. what fascinates me is this definition “to regret the absence or loss of “.

The phrase “I miss you” is a common among us all. However we tend to miss the deeper meaning of the word in that phrase. The phrase goes off into the space of social communication not noticing the tone of regret. Missing someone or something is in essence a form of regret. A strong and visceral emotion that tugs at the heart strings of us human beings.

“I miss you”.
Words that express regret. As per regret goes some are just top of the head like spilled milk but some can dig deep into the emotional labyrinth. With synonyms on the lines of agonize, bemoan, bewail. grieve, lament and yearn. Words that carry emotional weight on a level we couldn't tap unless we feel it ourselves.

“I miss you...”.
Alone it hangs, cast into the void. Painful if let alone. The echoes reverberate even more pain into the souls to the ones who cast the words out. A cry of regret perhaps with hope, acceptance, or just sorrow. A cry to be back in the familiar comforting warmth which becomes fleeting every passing day or the chance to savour the hug for the final time. It hangs in the heart more than necessary sometimes reminding and replaying bittersweet moments. Tugging bit by bit at the heartstrings. Only mellowed by acceptance and closure does this phrase erase the pain and relives the days.

“I miss you too…”
Reciprocation, the “other happy ending”. The tone of regret still plays in the phrase but its pain is severely reduced and replaced with hope and excitement.  Comforting is the reciprocation of regret. The understanding and sharing of a pain we carry in ourselves. Almost touching but never quite, a soothing feeling that partially quenches the thirst only to long for it more. It connects and synchronises the beating hearts of two or more individuals sharing the same regret and pain, pulling their hearts ever so closer and strengthening their bonds.

“I miss you”
3 words that are assembled into a neat package. A phrase that conveys regret, heals scars, and pulls hearts together. Humbling anyone who says it by killing arrogance. No ‘regret’ makes an ego grow larger. This phrase just makes you heart bigger, so own it. Never be afraid to use it. Now that you know it says more than three words appreciate it. Add intensity to it or just let it be. You choose how you want to express it.

I MISS YOU SO MUCH.
